The Kelvin Heights Track is an enjoyable track for all beginner and intermediate riders (plus a section for the advanced rider). This track can be added to the Frankton Trail, or you can start from Frankton.
The trail itself starts just below the Bridge as it crosses the Kawarau. In total there is about 18 kilometres of riding through a variety of trails. The section along the lake front from Frankton to the yacht club near the golf course is easy and suitable for all levels of beginners. The gravel trail is wide and flat and to complement it, the views out to the lake are fantastic.
Once you reach the golf course however the trail gets progressively harder. It becomes more narrow and with a number of steep drops and rocks to navigate. The further you go round the harder the trail gets. The hardest part of the trail, for advanced riders only, goes from Park Street to Jardines Park. Many locals will use this as a testing ground for their bike handling skills as it winds its way through tight tree lined single track.
An alternative for beginner and intermediate riders is to loop back from the golf course cafe along Grove Lane or take this route if you are heading toward the Jack’s Point Trail. To do so turn left before the golf course on Grove Lane and follow into Cedar Drive all the way around to Jardines Park at the end of Poplar Drive.
Should you wish to end your journey at the golf course cafe staff will be more than happy to organize a water taxi back to Queenstown or the Kawarau Falls hotel.
