Glenorchy

Destination

Surrounded by snow capped towering mountains, glacier fed rivers and ancient beech forest, Glenorchy feels worlds away from the bustling resort town of Queenstown. Situated at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu, Glenorchy is a stunning 45 km drive down the lake from Queentown and is a great place to spend a couple days.

The Routeburn Track - one of New Zealand's multiday Great Walks - starts very near Glenorchy. Add to this a variety of other half to full-day walks and the Glenorchy area quickly becomes a trampers paradise. The small settlement of Paradise itself is 20 kms on past Glenorchy and is the home of many Lord of the Rings scenes.

Glenorchy is a great escape from Queenstown, but it's not an escape from the region's great mountain bike trails. Get away from the crowds of Queenstown and base yourself in lovely GY to experience some epic South Island mountain biking.
