Waitarere Forest

Regional Ride

Manawatu, North Island

There are many tracks in the forest, but just a few signposts. The routes shown here are the main, wide, gravel 4WD forestry roads. The routes shown in this map are the main routes and relatively easy for cycling. Some other roads are marked, but it´s recommended taking a GPS (signal is good even within the forest) as it is easy to get lost if you haven't been through before. The main entrance is on Waitarere Beach Road and is clearly marked. The gates will usually be padlocked. Walkers can use the side gate. There is parking on the grass in front of the horse riding field beside the entrance. The other entrance is off Oturoa Road which is off SH1 near the Foxton bridge. You will to park off the road near the farm entrance, and go up a farm vehicle track for 2 km to enter the forest (gate padlocked, but okay for walkers and cyclists to enter). The main route here leads along the edge of the forest beside the farm, and meets the main track approximately midway between Waitarere Beach and Foxton estuary.

These roads are long and straight and essentially flat, and relatively sheltered if cycling on a windy day. There can be rough areas with branches and ruts if forestry vehicles have been operating in an area. After rain there can be muddy areas.
