The Great Rides and Cycle Trails of New Zealand

Mangahao Dams

Regional Ride

Manawatu, North Island

This is a great ride to do, with many interesting spots along the way. Check out the different dams and if you've packed a lunch, there's plenty of spots to stop for a picnic.

The weather can change quickly, so take a jacket and layered clothing. It is suited to riders of all fitness levels and suitable for children 10 years and up.  As it is a there and back ride, you can decide how far in you want to go.

Starting this ride at the car park, ride up past the Power House at Mangaore, up Mangahao road to a series of Hydro Dams in the Tararua foothills behind Shannon. From the Power House, start off climbing up Mangahao Rd for about 4km to reach the saddle (400m high) and descend to the Lower No3 Dam. This is a great spot to stop and take some photos of the spectacular views. Continue along the road beside the dam before you start climbing up and over the hill to get to the Middle No2 Dam. Once again you ride along the side of the dam until you reach the Upper No1 Dam. Stop here for a rest and maybe a picnic, before retracing your path back to the Power House.
