This popular scenic drive is even better when done on two wheels! The long coastal highway is packed full of tourist attractions, including the two glaciers (Fox and Franz Josef), dark, reflective lakes, the pancake rocks at Punakaiki and of course the Southern Alps and wild Tasman coast on either side.
State Highway 6 runs all the way from Inangahua to Invercargill, but our first recommendation would be to ride the section between Hokitika and Wanaka. This still leaves a satisfying 420 km of riding. Either direction is fine, although southbound will increase the chances for a tailwind, and allow you the rewarding climb over Haast Pass. It is mostly fast and flat, with a small climb near Fox, and then the larger, steeper climb at Haast that should leave you puffing by the top!
Various companies can offer support vehicle and logistics for moving gear. We recommend the road cycling packages from Adventure South if you are looking for
