Conveniently located at the commencement of the Pathway of Fire cycle ride, the NZ Maori Arts and Crafts Institute (Te Puia) is New Zealand’s premier visitor experience.

Te Puia is the home of the world famous Pohutu geyser and our National Carving and Weaving Schools. Take a journey with a Maori guide and experience the natural beauty of Te Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley – a place of gushing waters, steaming vents, boiling mud pools and the world famous Pohutu Geyser. 

Visit our interpretive galleries and unique spaces rich in history and stories, and come face to face with New Zealand’s best known bird, the kiwi.

Let us welcome you to Te Puia to see and understand the origins of the Pathway of Fire before your begin your cycle ride. 

Visit our Gallery and our Pathway of Fire: Te Ara Ahi exhibition and learn first-hand about the journey of Ngatiroirangi, a revered spiritual expert, who arrived on the Te Arawa waka approximately six hundred years ago.  Through his plight local Māori believe the geothermal system was created.

Te Pō is Te Puia’s evening cultural experience. It is a feast of cultural storytelling, entertainment and Māori cuisine.

Enjoy an in-depth experience of Māori customs, an innovative indigenous meal – including hangi-cooked meats and vegetables, seafood and vegetarian options – and complete the evening under the stars at Pohutu, our famous geyser.

Daytime Experience Combo: Guided Tour + Cultu The Daytime Experience Combo tour runs hourly 9am-5pm (winter: 9am-4pm). Experience a personal encounter with our people, culture and place. You can enjoy Te Puia with a guide or on your own. The Daytime Combo tour includes a 45 minute cultural performance.
