Wilderness Guides is a family owned outdoor adventure company based in Picton and operated for the past 14 years by Steve and Juliet Gibbons, New Zealanders and Marlborough people with a passion for the outdoors. Originally formed in 1982, the company has a proud tradition associated with the wilderness regions of the top of the South Island of New Zealand.

The owners are hands-on and have a background as outdoor guides in the area and with their close-knit team and dedicated team, offer a truly personalized service for all guests. Tours offered are quality and authentic New Zealand wilderness experiences with an emphasis on education, conservation, local history and culture as well as New Zealand native flora and fauna. This is combined with the finest of local food and wine.

These include mountain bike hire from one day to multiple days and a variety of cycle tour packages for the Queen Charlotte Track (one of NZ’s Great Rides). Wilderness Guides also offer sea kayaking and hiking options in the Marlborough Sounds.

All guides hold current first aid certificates and are equipped with the appropriate knowledge and safety/communications equipment on each trip. The company, a Department of Conservation concessionaire, has an outstanding safety record and a professionally audited safe operations plan for all facets of the operation. Wilderness Guides employs locally based guides wherever possible to ensure guests truly experience the essence of this country.

Based in a high profile position on Picton’s vibrant waterfront, Wilderness Guides welcomes you to experience the Marlborough Sounds by foot, by cycle and by kayak. This is where your adventure begins!

Rates

Hard Tail Mountain Bike Hire We offer quality mountain bikes for hire from $60 per day. These are 24-speed 2012 model Cannondales with front suspension, hard tail, disc brakes and are maintained daily. A helmet, repair kit and pump is also provided as part of your hire. 60.00
3 Day Freedom Hike Bike Kayak Our 3 Day Hike/Bike/Kayak Combo takes the best sections of the Queen Charlotte Track to hike and mountain bike and rolls these together with a one day independent kayak rental to provide an affordable, fantastic package to 'do it all' in the Marlborough Sounds.

Day 1: Your day begins with a briefing at Wild Guides before catching the 9.30am water taxi to Ship Cove. Hike from Ship Cove to Furneaux Lodge Jetty (5 hours) and transfer across Endeavour Inlet at day's end.

Day 2: Mountain bikes are delivered this morning by water taxi for your ride from Camp Bay to Portage Bay. You can opt for either riding along the panoramic but more difficult Queen Charlotte Track or a sce
nic ride along the Kenepuru Road.

Day 3: Your kayak is delivered to Torea Bay this morning (near Portage) for your independent kayak around the picturesque bays and coves of Queen Charlotte Sound concluding to either Ngakuta Bay or Picton Harbour.

Day 1 – Ship Cove Punga Cove, Endeavour Inlet (approx. 4-5 hours/26km)

We collect you from your accommodation in Picton to join Beachcomber Cruises service to Ship Cove where your walk begins. This scenic & historic reserve was a favourite anchorage for Captain Cook during his explorations in the 1770s. Experience virgin beech forest at its best plus stunning views of the Queen Charlotte Sound. Take time to explore the waterfall walk and the Captain Cook memorial and then set off on the track. From Furneaux Lodge, the track is mainly coastal which takes you around the inlet through regenerating native bush to the call of bellbirds, fantails and other NZ native birds. Pause at the head of the bay to learn more about antimony & the mining industry that thrived there in the 1880s. Follow the main track onwards and into Big Bay before working your way towards Camp Bay and Punga
Cove.

Day 2 – Mountain Bike from Punga Cove to Torea Saddle/The Portage (Approx. 4-5 hours/22.5km)

A challenging but very rewarding bike ride on the ridgeline between Punga Cove & Torea Saddle near Portage. Truly grand vistas abound round every corner.

Day 3 – Torea Saddle/The Portage to Anakiwa (approx.4 hours/20.5km)

Farewell Portage and ascend to the ridgeline once again, enjoying stunning views. Open farmland and a grand native bush section to finish is a fitting finale. Today you return by boat from the Outward Bound Wharf and join Beachcomber Cruises service back to Picton to compete your journey. The boat departs sharp at 3.30pm.

2 Day Mountain Bike Trip Day 1: Mountain Bike from Camp Bay to Torea Saddle/The Portage (Approx. 4-5 hours/22.5km)

A challenging but very rewarding bike ride on the ridgeline between Punga Cove & Torea Saddle near Portage. Truly grand vistas abound round every corner. Estimated time of arrival at CampBay is 10/10.15am.

Day 2: Mountain Bike from Portage Resort to Anakiwa (Approx. 4-5 hours/22km)

Farewell Portage and ascend to the ridgeline once again, enjoying stunning views. Open farmland and a grand native bush section to finish is a fitting finale. Today you return by boat from the Bound WharfOutward and join Beachcomber Cruises service back to Picton to compete your journey. The boat departs sharp at 3.30pm.
