Cromwell is a small town found midway between Wanaka and Queenstown on the SH6. It would be a place you could stop if you were hoping to escape the crowds. There are heaps of challenging mountain bike trails in the area surrounding Cromwell.
If you're visiting Cromwell, consider stopping and walking around the Old Cromwell Town which is a pedestrianized area found on the shores of Lake Dunstan. These beautifully restored historic buildings were saved when the Clyde Dam was created and the original Cromwell village was flooded.
There are plenty of options for eating and accommodation in Cromwell. In fact, Cromwell is known to have a number of eateries which feature meat and produce from local farms.
