Roxburgh Gorge Trail Experience

Cycle New Zealand's "Grand Canyon"

The Roxburgh Gorge Cycle Trail offers an incredible cycling experience through the remote and stunning Roxburgh Gorge - New Zealand's "Grand Canyon." The 34km, Roxburgh Gorge Trail provides a spectacular one-day ride between Alexandra and the Roxburgh Dam, following the Clutha Mata-au River.

Starting from Alexandra, cyclists enter the Roxburgh Gorge with bluffs rising almost 350 metres on either side of the river at its most dramatic point.

The trail opens up access to areas of historic importance, with old schist huts built into the rock by Chinese miners and remains of two small mining settlements. The opportunity to explore these well preserved mining relics set within an imposing and inspiring landscape suits cyclists of most abilities.

The Cycle Trail is mostly Grade 2, however does have some Grade 3 sections with steeper climbs.

After 10kms of cycling from Alexandra, the trail stops at Doctors Point Jetty where you will board a jet boat that takes you on an exhilarating 12km ride down the river to Shingle Creek Jetty. Here you'll hop back on the bike to ride the final 12kms to the Lake Roxburgh Village.

Due to the remote location bookings are essential. There are set departure times from Doctors Point jetty and Shingle Creek jetty - these times can be found below. When booking, please be sure to note departure location and time and wait for trip confirmation from NZByBike.

The cost is $95 per person - minimum of two and max of 10 people (plus bikes).
