The Hauraki Rail Trail follows the path of two historic railway lines and takes in a variety of stunning scenery - from the bush covered Karangahake Gorge to the flat countryside of Thames, Paeroa and Te Aroha. This Hauraki Rail Trail Escape allows you to experience the best of the trail in only one days riding over two nights; you'll get out of the city and into the countryside and most importantly --- out on your bike.
Start your weekend adventure with a night in Thames at the comfortable and historic Sunkist Backpackers; this heritage building is only minutes away from the water and close to some of Thames' best eateries. With a 10am departure the next morning, you'll have plenty of time to get ready for a days riding on the Rail Trail. If you happen to be in town on a Saturday, head down to the Saturday Market to fuel up for breakfast - be sure to check out the locally famous mussel fritters.
Mid-morning, you and your bikes will be shuttled to Waikino; enjoy the morning sun in the Karnagahake Gorge as you ride generally downhill towards Paeroa. You have the entire day at your disposal to take in the best cafes (and pubs!) along the trail as you make your way back to Thames for one final night at Sunkist. As you ride into town, grab some fish and chips at the wharf before rewarding yourself with a much deserved pint.
