In July 2010 the Government declined the application to fund further the development of the Tauranga Moana Cycle Trail based on a large amount of uncertainty over land access that would have been in the very middle of the proposed Great Ride.
It was proposed the Tauranga Moana ride would be 75 kilometers extending from Waihi Beach around the edge of Tauranga Harbour to Tauranga, passing on the way through the towns of Athenree, Katikati, Omokoroa and even Matakana Island.
Although the proposed route is predominately coastal along council and crown owned land there is a large section in the middle to which access could be foreseeably granted at this stage.

Is this likely to go ahead at any stage. Seems a shame the rest of the country can get their act together, why not Tauranga
