The definitive where-to-ride guide for cycling in New Zealand

Aratihi

Regional Ride

Wellington, North Island

With a moderate grade, this is a popular way to reach the summit of Makara Peak.

The bottom 0.5km is the steepest, after which the gradient becomes a bit more mellow. Much of the track surface has worn down to rough bare rock, just to make the climb a little more challenging.

Most traffic is up hill, but this is a two-way track so watch out for people travelling in the other direction.

Aratihi (Ah-rah-tee-hee) is a New Zealand Māori word that means:

- ara (noun) way, path, lane, passageway, track, course.

- tihi (noun) summit, top, peak, point.
