The definitive where-to-ride guide for cycling in New Zealand

Okahukura Loop Road

Regional Ride

Ruapehu, North Island

Native forestry logging from days of old have left the Pureora Forest Park scared with gravel roads, old tramlines and logging tracts that are just awesome for mountain biking.  The forest has an endless array of unmarked trails and roads that can be explored freely plus a number of great trails.

The Okahukura Loop is a suitable for most beginners riders.  It is not technical at all really.  In fact, it was once a road that has been turned back into a mountain bike trail and become slightly overgrown in some places - perfect for mountain biking.  The loop is approximately 14 kilometres and will take you an hour or so.  There is one river crossing in the ride.  It does not make too much difference in which direction you choose to ride the track.

Okahukura Loop track is in the northern part of Pureora Forest Park.  Take Waitaramoa Road off State Highway 30 (the Te Kuiti - Mangakino Highway) almost opposite the Pureora Field Centre to access the Park.  About 8kms further north on Waitaramoa Road from SH30 is the turn off to Okahukura Rd about 8kms.  Continue a few more kilometres along here to a car parking area overlooking the Okahukura Stream.
