The definitive where-to-ride guide for cycling in New Zealand

Motueka

Destination

Motueka is a quaint little town situated only 47 kms from Nelson and is an ideal place to base yourself before traveling to Golden Bay to mountain bike the Heaphy Track. Motueka offers sunshine, fine beaches, bush walking, trout fishing (Motueka river) and a fantastic wine, foods and crafts scene.

Motueka has a fantastic variety of quaint cafes, shops selling local arts and crafts and is located near some of New Zealand's best choices for craft beer, local wines and fresh fruit and vegetables.

Situated near the banks of the Motueka River inland from Tasman Bay, Motueka is home to one of New Zealand's most enjoyable climates with high sunshine hours, long summers and mild winters. These conditions are ideal for growing grapes, apples and hops - you'll find heaps of stands on the way in and out of town selling local produce. Mild winters result in cruisy year round mountain biking as well.

Also along the roadside you'll find outlets for potters, artists, sculptors and other talented craftspeople among the orchards. There are also many restaurants, cafés and vineyards in the surrounding area with accommodation options to suit any budget.

The Kahurangi National Park is just 30 minutes away, and offers a range of tramping tracks from one to six days, including the Heaphy Track - now open to bikers - which crosses the park from Collingwood to Karamea. Stay the night, stock up on supplies in one of the large supermarkets and set off to enjoy New Zealand's best multi-day bike ride.
