Taupo is a busy town of 30,000 people which sits on the shores of picturesque Lake Taupo - Australasia's largest freshwater lake at 616 square kilometers.
A great short trip is to view the might Huka Falls waterfall just north of the town where the Lake roars out starting the mighty Waikato River.
As well as it's easy access to the biking in the region, Taupo is a veritable playground of adventure activity in it's own right with the likes of sky-diving, bungy jumping and jet boating making up the daily diet of the many visiting tourists in the summer and the proximity of the Mt Ruapehu skifields make it an attractive destination in the winter. A great option is to finish a day or riding with a soak in the geothermal hot pools. If adrenalin is not your cup of tea Taupo is close to the award winning Kinloch golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus and some of the best trout fishing you will find anywhere on the planet.
In the evening Taupo comes alive to the multitude of restaurants and cafes, bars and live music. There are many options for accommodation from backpackers to hotels and luxury lodges.
