The definitive where-to-ride guide for cycling in New Zealand

Stony Bay

Regional Ride

Coromandel, North Island

Signs clearly mark what is for biking to keep riders off of the walking track. Even though the walking track may look more enjoyable, and safer to ride, keep off of it because it's illegal to ride.

Hike 3km up slippery rock then dive down just as steep to Fletchers Bay. This track is very slippery when wet and usually covered in cow remnants.

Even though there are DOC signs at the beginning and of the track stating the track is unsuitable for riding, hundreds of people do it every year during the Colville Connection. The riding to and from the road ends is very nice, just the bike-and-hike in the middle is slightly torturous. I would not recommend to do it as a stand alone ride.
