Alexandra to Chatto Creek Trail
Regional Ride
Central Otago, South Island
The 17 km ride to Chatto Creek is easy with a steady gentle climb on a wide loose metal trail. You will cross a number of country roads, unlike the previous occupiers of The Rail Trail you don,t get the right of way so watch out for the school bus or local farmer as friendly as they may be.
A red line gangers shed will be passed on the left with information panels inside about the local area, obviously for those traveling in the other direction that will be the right. The single lane Manuherikia Bridge No 2 120 metres long and 14 metres high is a popular photo stop and is followed by the old Tucker Hill gold diggings that turned up only enough gold to provide for the miners tucker. The trail leaves the Manuherikia river and follows Chatto Creek. What looks like areas of erosion are naturally occurring saltpans.
The Chatto Creek Tavern should not be missed on your left hand side with a pleasant garden area and places to park your bike it is a perfect stop for lunch. If you are returning to Alexandra you will be pleasantly surprised by the ease of your trip back as its mainly a long gentle down hill.
A 1km road trip from the Alexandra end of the Galloway Rd to Manorburn Dam is a worth-while scenic detour.
