Oturehua to Wedderburn
Route Notes
Leaving Oturehua heading towards Wedderburn you firstly pass the Gold Progress Quartz Mine marked on the right hand side up Reef Road. This mine is worth a visit to view the only remaining intact poppet head in the Otago gold-fields. Erected much later than many of the other poppet heads it was made in 1928 from Australian hardwood. Unfortunately, the Gold Progress mine failed to deliver any significant returns to it's workers and investors.
Your ride climbs the northern slopes of Rough Ridge passing over the highest point on the Otago Central Rail Trail as you cross into the Maniototo Plains. Extensive views of both the Hawkdun Ranges to the north and the Ida Ranges to the south make for lovely riding on this section.
Look for Seagull Hill Gangers' Shed to stamp your Rail Trail Passport. You will cross the 45th Parallel twice on your way to Wedderburn - marked by concrete blocks.
Adventurous riders can head right into the Hawkdun Range and the Oteake Conservation Area. A great ride is up onto the Mt Ida Water Race and back down to Falls Dams. The Mt Ida water race in fact runs a full 108km to Naseby. For the real keen riders continue onto the Little Omarama Saddle and all the way to Omarama.
