Section of Alps 2 Ocean Trail Set to Open

As the summer ticks on, more and more of New Zealand's Great Rides of Nga Haerenga, The New Zealand Cycle Trail are set to open. Last month the fantastic Waikato River Trails in Waikato opened and is absolutely going off - we've been speaking with local businesses and understand cyclists are already coming from as far away as Sydney to ride this iconic NZ mountain bike ride.

The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail on the South Island is set to be one of the premier rides of NZCT. While it won't be ridable in its full state for some time, a section is now set to be open for cyclists by Christmas.

The full ride - 312 kms from from Aoraki Mount Cook to the coast at Oamaru - is expected to be officially opened in November 2012.

Until then, there is an excellent cycle loop available out of Twizel that cyclists will be able to enjoy over the holidays.

Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail Joint Committee Mike Neilson says, “We will open a section of trail at the Southern end of Lake Pukaki that’s easy for the public to access by bike or by foot. This will give people the opportunity to experience the quality of tracks, the gradient and to get an early look at our signage. We’d like people to check it out and let us know what they think.”

By Christmas, cyclists will be able to ride a combination of quiet country roads, canal roads and the completed sections of cycle trail in a loop from Twizel. Construction contines on other portions of the trail in an effort get the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail open for riding by November of 2012. Construction is beginning on the Duntroon to Elephant Rocks section in the Waitaki Valley. Also, the approval phase is coming to an end for a section from Ohau Weir to Lake Ohau Lodge and from the Lodge through Quailburn and Tarnbrae via Quailburn road and into Omarama.

If everything goes as planned, by mid January cyclists will be able to take in the stunning country from Mount Cook to Twizel then on to South Eastern corner of Ohau.

Ultimately the 312km Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail will descend 780m through the Mackenzie basin down the Waitaki Valley to Oamaru.

Keep an eye on NZByBike.com for more details on the progress of the Alps 2 Ocean Trail and the other Great Rides of Nga Haerenga.

Waikato River Trails Opening November 5th

The Waikato River Trails, the second full “Great Ride” to be completed under Nga Haerenga, The New Zealand Cycle Trail will be opened via a public cycling and walking event this Saturday 5 November.

The Waikato River Trails stretch 100km along New Zealand’s longest river - the “Mighty" Waikato River. The trails stretch from Atiamuri all the way to the upper end of Lake Karapiro and take in five lakes, four hydro dams and a number of small towns and villages and the very best of the Waikato region's stunning natural environment.

“There is a growing demand for cycle tourism and the opening of the Waikato River Trails will achieve a number of objectives including boosting tourism opportunities, providing employment, and opening up public access to the beautiful Waikato River for visitors and locals alike,” Mr Balm says. Already on NZByBike - New Zealand's most-searched cycle information website - a number of local businesses have begun capitalizing on the cycle tourism market.

Cyclists interested in guided trail rides, bike hire and accommodation are encouraged to check out Awhina Wilderness Experience or the Lake Maraetai Lodge.

The Waikato River Trails will give cyclists the chance to experience native bush, exotic forest, historic landmarks, rock formations, rolling farmland and open reserves, as well as lake and river views.

“The last two years have seen construction on the project accelerate to the point where the trails are now complete. The project has not only created jobs and business opportunities but it has opened up access to the mighty Waikato River like never before. In the last year alone 6000 native trees have been planted by volunteers in wetlands and in other areas along the trails. The trust has also constructed 18km of fencing that now provides a barrier between farming activities and the Waikato River.”" says trails trust manager Glyn Wooller.

The Waikato River Trails Grand Opening will be held on Saturday 5 November starting at the Whakamaru Reserve at 11am, rain or shine. Speakers will include New Zealand Cycle Trail Ambassador and Olympic Gold Medalist Sarah Ulmer, Taupo MP Louise Upston, Green Party MP Kevin Hague and South Waikato District Council Mayor Neil Sinclair. Anyone his is interested are being invited to join the celebration by participating in one of three community events, an 8km walk, a 14km walk or a 14km cycle ride.

The new 6.8km section of Tasman’s Great Taste Trail that runs through Rabbit Island will officially be opened on this coming Sunday, October 2nd. New Zealand's Cycle Trail Ambassador Sarah Ulmer will be joined by Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne to officially open this scenic portion of the Great Taste Trail.

The new section of cycle trail, which is suitable for all ages and fitness levels, runs from the entrance to Rabbit Island through to the Mapua estuary. Here a brand new ferry has been built to transport cyclists to Mapua’s bustling wharf area.

The event will run from 930am - 530pm on Sunday with a ceremony to bless the ferry being held at midday.
Mangaparua Track Now Open

Earlier this year in July, a slip half a km away from the Bridge to Nowhere swept away a section of of Mangaparua Track. DOC had closed the track to inspect the damage and clear the slip. Thanks to their work this epic track is again open for riding.

The Mangaparua Track is part of the Ruapehu-Whanganui Trails (previously Mountain to Sea Trail) that stretches from Ohakune all the way to Wanganui.

Spring has Sprung & Cycle Specials

Well it's official, Spring has finally sprung. We've celebrated it in style here in Queenstown and have been out on our bikes more in the last week than we have in the last couple months.

Matt and the crew went on a Saturday afternoon ride to Arrowtown to soak up the sun this weekend and tonight we're headed out to 7 Mile. Dan is off to do some riding around Tekapo this weekend. We're getting ready for the Otago Rail Trail Classic - a 100 mile ride along the entirety of the Otago Central Rail Trail.

What about you? Any big rides planned?

Tell us about them in the comments section below.

Cycle Specials

Huka Falls Jet

The crew up at Hukafalls Jet in Taupo have a special going on until the end of November. Purchase an adult or child ride on the Hukafalls Jet and get a free soak at the A C Baths and Hot Pools. Grab your bike first and go for a spin at the Craters of the Moon - the soak will feel that much better when you're finished!

Just mention 'Thrill 'n' Thaw' when you're booking or checking in to get your free pass.

Golden Bay Flights

Jim from Golden Bay Flights has just started offering a new flight service for mountain bikers. Catch a flight from Takaka to the top of Canaan Downs and cycle down the Rameka Track (we reckon it's one of the best rides in the greater Nelson & Golden Bay region, if not for all of New Zealand).

It's a bargain at only $200 for four people and four bikes - heaps better than cycling up the Takaka Hill!

Check back next month for more cycle specials - and don't forget to fill us in on any epic rides you have planned this month.

Ride On,

Godzone Adventure to Hold Multiday Expedition and Adventure Race in Queenstown

Godzone Adventure announced today that a multiday, non-stop expedition and adventure race will be held in Queenstown during April of next year.

It's been 22 years since the world's first inaugural event was held in New Zealand - the Raid Gauloises - and event directors Adam Fairmaid and Warren Bates decided it was time to bring the sport back to the adventure capital of the world.

Teams of four people will travel essentially non-stop over a stunning variety of terrains and landscapes whilst passing through a series of mandatory checkpoints along the course. These coed teams will compete in navigating, trekking, mountain biking and kayaking throughout the race. Competitors will be challenged by harsh weather conditions, lack of sleep and other unannounced disciplines like abseiling. Details of the course will not be announced until the night prior to the start - however, it's expected to stretch 450km through untrecked wilderness. Navigational skills will be crucial to success.

Winning teams will sleep less than 5 hours over the duration of the race and are expected to complete the course in about 3.5 days. The race directors are aiming to make the race an aspiration for many - a personal challenge; it's hoped that the adventure race will be attempted by not only the elites and those who have undertaken proper training will finish after 5.5 days.

Race Directors Adam Fairmaid and Warren Bates

Teams will wear satellite tracking devices throughout the adventure race. This information will be displayed live on the website and allow for others to follow competitors over the days of the race. Breaks for sleep, potential navigational mishaps and the sheer epicness of the event will be there for online spectators to follow. The required coed aspect of the race - rare in the world sport - will lead to interesting dynamics and adds to the overall challenge.

Entries opened today and competitors from around New Zealand expected to attend the race set for April 7th - 14th. Thanks to Queenstown's airport and the increasing number of cheap flights from Asia and Australia coming to New Zealand, it's hoped that international competitors will come down under to attend the inaugural event. The race is unsupported which will allows for entrants to participate without a support team - an important feature given the logistical headache that comes from 5 days of racing and changing gear. Teams will plan what gear and supplies they need and pack them into gear boxes which will be strategically located along the course.

The Godzone Adventure Race has received accreditation from the Adventure Race World Series, and the winning team will win an entry to the world series final to be held in France September of 2012. International racers often see New Zealand as the holy grail of adventure racing and the Godzone event represents a new standard for adventure racing - evidenced by event patron Steve Gurney.

Lake Track Taupo Receives $2.26 Million in Funding

One of the 18 multi-day, government-sponsored Great Rides will receive some much needed funding today at a formal event in Taupo. The Lake Track Taupo is a joint initiative of Bike Taupo, the Department of Conservation, Taupo District Council, local community supporters and the New Zealand Cycle Trail Project.

The Lake Track Taupo will take in the very best of the stunning Taupo region. Ultimately, the trail will stretch 93 km and start at Whakaipo Bay - a 15 minute drive West of Taupo. It will pass through the village of Kinloch before reaching the Waihaha River and State Highway 32.

“The idea of having a trail along the western shore of Lake Taupo has been a dream for a long time. The stunning scenery, native forest, close proximity to the lake and easy track gradient will make this trail very popular for both cyclists and walkers,” said New Zealand Cycle Trail Project Manager Richard Balm.

Bike Taupo has already constructed the first 33 km of the Lake Track Taupo under an existing agreement with the Department of Conservation which includes the popular W2K Track. Cyclists will have the option to ride the full trail over 2 or 3 days or may simply do day trips on specific sections of the trail. Primary access to the trail will be by road and/or water taxi.

This is another huge step for the New Zealand Cycle Tourism industry. The opening of the trail will bring new business and tourism opportunities to the region as well as continuing to bolster Taupo's reputation as a year-round playground. Mountain biking in Taupo is a big drawcard and set to grow significantly over the coming months.

Hawke's Bay Water Ride Receives $712,000 in Funding

On Wednesday, The New Zealand Cycle Trail project signed its contract for the new Hawke's Bay Trail - the Water Ride. This $712,000 in approved funding from the Cycle Trail Project will allow the 78 km Water Ride to become a reality. The Water Ride and the already approved 55 km Landscapes Ride are a joint initiative of the Hawke's Bay Regional Council and The New Zealand Cycle Trail Project.

The Water Ride is a Grade 1 ride that will cater for all levels of riders including families and children. New Zealand Cycle Trail Project Manger Jonathan Kennett said, “The Water Ride promises to be a very enjoyable riding experience for both locals and visitors alike and should also appeal to Hawke’s Bay’s burgeoning cruise ship market.”

Cycle Tourism is a rapidly growing industry throughout New Zealand. Like the other 17 Great Rides scattered about the country, the Water Ride will fuel growth to the Hawke's Bay economy.

Hawke's Bay is in a fantastic position to build on the growth of the Cycle Tourism Industry - with a strong tourism infrastructure, world-renowned wineries, great fishing, and heaps of sunshine, cycle tourists from New Zealand and abroad will undoubtedly be drawn to this region.

Easter 2011 Will See New Downhill Mountain Bike Event in Queenstown

Great news today for keen downhill mountain bikers -- a world class downhill track in the Ben Lomond forest above Queenstown will be debuted in a three day event planned for Easter 2011.

Southern Traverse's Geoff Hunt believes there is a huge depand for an event of this caliber in Queenstown.

“The track is still to be defined," he said, "but there is huge potential in the forest and with the support of Skyline Queenstown who will provide access for the event I believe we have a great formula. The local mountain bike fraternity spends considerable time in this area riding the already formed tracks established by the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club and bikers are upbeat about the opportunity for a real adrenalin rush that the new event offers.”

The course will be aimed at expert riders. It's technically demanding and begins at the top of the Skyline Gondola. It will stretch 3kms through he Ben Lomond Forest and finish on Brecon Street. In true Queenstown style, a full on party atmosphere is expected at the course's end over the Easter weekend race.

Qualifiers will take place on Friday April 22nd and 23rd. The final is scheduled for Easter Sunday, April 24.

The final will include the top 100 competitors -- with good prize money up for grabs, the race is expected to attract competitors from all over New Zealand.

There is no question this event will continue to bolster Queesntown's growing international mountain biking status - as a planned annual ride, it will become an Easter tradition for years to come.

NZbyBike Pedaling Update Number 5 - What a great year it has been!

Merry Christmas everyone,

It was New Year’s, then suddenly it was Easter, then it was cold and riding was difficult, then it was spring and time to ride and now it’s Christmas. The year rattles off the tongue as if it was a week.

It may seem like time has flown but for NZ cycling and cycle tourism, 2010 has been monumental. The Government’s commitment to developing new cycle trails took a huge jump from politicking to reality and both local communities and DOC have put in an amazing effort to make this year the most prolific in terms of track creation.

July 2nd saw Prime Minister John Key open the first official section of New Zealand Cycle Trails in Ohakune with the Old Coach Road trail. Work has continued relentlessly in this region with the Old Coach Road Cycle trail nearly completed all the way to Horopito, the Mangaparau trail has been completely upgraded and this summer DOC is working on Kaiwhakauka Track (linking through to Whakahoro and the Returuke Valley/Fisher's Track/National Park).

Trails have been opening around the country consistently throughout spring and never one to miss a glass of wine the NZbyBike crew attended the opening of the Gibbston River Trail. The wine was so good we followed it up with a family outing, tasting wines and riding with the new Gibbston Wine Tour guys. Check out the pictures.

But our pick of the year is the newly opened St James Cycle Trail near Hanmer Springs. This ride is simply awesome for those advanced riders – check out Dan’s ride blog.

So over Christmas everyone heads off now to ride off the excesses of gluttony. Most of the NZbyBike crew will be around Queenstown riding and we will all be on call if you have any web queries.

And on that note – We wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year – and a big final thank-you to Kris Ericksen, Deb Hogon and Stephen Harmann for their contributions to the site and help with editing in the last month.

See you all in the New Year – Ride well.

Dan, Mat, Matt, Matze, Scott, Toby and Nicole

The Old Ghost Trail Receives $2 million from New Zealand Cycle Trail Project

There was more great news yesterday for another one of New Zealand’s 18 Great Rides, The Old Ghost Road Trail. The trail is the culmination of work by the Mokihinui-Lyell Backcountry Trust, the Department of Conservation, the New Zealand Cycle Trail Project and over 50 local volunteers.

The $2 million in approved funding will make this 80 km trail a reality.

Starting and finishing 45 minutes from Westport, the Old Ghost Road Trail will follow a 19th century gold miner’s road that once connected Lyell with Mokihinui on the northern West Coast. The Great Ride will pass long forgotten settlements of Zalatown, Gibbstown and 8 Mile. Along the trail cyclists will have the opportunity to learn about these historic goldfields in a truly unique setting that passes valleys, native forest and open tussock ridges.

The Great Ride will combine historic gold-mining ghost towns with some of New Zealand’s most intact heritage and hard rock mining sites. By attracting visitors, creating lasting job opportunities, and providing the Buller Region with a first class recreational and heritage activity, it will be something for the West Coast community to be justifiably proud of.

This Grade 3 mountain biking trail will be suitable for intermediate and advanced riders. The first 8.5 km of the 80 km long Great Ride is currently open for mountain bikers and is an excellent opportunity for a day outing.

Far North Trail receives $3.9 million from New Zealand Cycle Trail project

More great news today as the New Zealand Cycle Trail (NZCT) project signs a $3.9 million contract for the new Bay of Islands to Hokianga Cycle Trail at a formal event in Moerewa at the Carving School.

Development work on the actual trail has already begun and substantial sections between Okaihau to Kaikohe and from Otiria to Kawakawa have been cleared. So far 61 people have been employed on developing the trail, whcih is a god send for the Far North communities.

When finished the Bay of Islands to Hokianga trail with be Grade 1 to 2, suitable for all beginners and families. It will be mostly flat and wide enough to allow cyclists to ride side-by-side for most of the ride. The trail is steeped in historical significance of early New Zealand history dating from before the New Zealand land wars, and in parts follows ancient Maori trails from East to West. The route crosses rural farm country, and passes through a number of small towns as well as many sites of historical and cultural significance. A unique feature of this trail will be a series of Pou, carved by iwi, which will be erected along the trail route to recall the history and stories of both iwi and Pakeha settlements in and around the area.

The 84km Bay of Islands to Hokianga Cycle Trail is planned to run from Opua to Mangungu near Horeke on the Hokianga harbour. The trail construction has been divided into four stages. The first section to be completed will be 14km of an old rail corridor between Kaikohe and Okaihau. The aim is for the trail to then run for 34km from Kaikohe to Kawakawa, 25km from Okaihau to Horeke and a further 11km from Kawakawa to Opua.

September Pedaling Update

Hi All,

Wow. It's been a month since our first Pedaling Update. Only a week ago we were yahooing that Spring was here and the Innovation Centre was full of bikes as everyone was riding before and after work. Now it's well and truly back to winter with snow on the ground and no bikes to be seen.

The website is going great, and we have another 19 businesses listed as either Standard or Premium listings this month. If your business is not listed yet, get on board - we will have only a handful of each business types in each town as Premium listings. A Premium listing ensures your business is always at the top of the business directory and Premium listings will also be included in all printed ride guides coming out this summer.

The biggest challenge we have at the moment with NZbyBike.com is creating content fast enough. A big thank-you to Warren at the Station Lodge in Ohakune for his content on the Old Coach Road Ride, and we are looking forward to receiving much more for the Central North Island from Warren.

If you are able to help us with writing up content, providing GPS data or taking photos we would welcome absolutely any help we can get!

Events

Dan was up in Rotorua for the Backpackers Conference where NZbyBike was a sponsor at the beginning of the month. We got a great write-up on Thumbrella following the launch.

This weekend sees Dan and Scott enter their first race of the summer - the Otago Rail Trail 100 Miler. It's nuts riding the Rail Trail in a day but both reckon this is to kick-start their exercise programmes - any bets on them not finishing? Matt is going to accompany the boys in the NZbyBike Spaceship - so if you're riding and want a hot cup of tea or coffee, drop by.

Great Lakes Tour - Even though we announced the dates late, it looks like we will have at least a dozen of us riding the inaugural Great Lakes Tour. If you can make the 1st - 3rd of October to ride an amazing ride from Tekapo to Ohau via Mount Cook on flat, gravel, canal roads, then there are still some spaces available.

Great Ride Latest News

New Zealand’s 18 Great Rides Now Approved for Funding

Prime Minister and Tourism Minister John Key announced today on World Tourism Day that another $13.9 million in funding has been approved for five more cycle trails under the New Zealand Cycle Trail Project.

With today’s announcement, all 18 Great Rides throughout New Zealand have now had their funding confirmed. The $13.9 million approved today brings the total government funding for the Great Rides to $45.6 million.

These 18 Great Rides are expected to provide over 2,000 km of trails that will take in New Zealand’s most iconic and picturesque landscapes. The cycle trails will generate lasting economic benefits to local communities and build upon New Zealand’s strong reputation as a premium tourism destination.

The five new Great Rides that have had their funding confirmed are the Bay of Islands to Hokianga Trail, the Hauraki Plains Trail, the Pathway of Fire, The Old Ghost Road, and the Roxburgh Gorge Trail.

Two of these Great Rides – the Mountain to Sea Trail and the Waikato River Trail – have already been partially opened and are in use. Construction on most of the Great Rides is expected to be underway this summer while five trails are presently under construction – the St James Great Trail, the Waikato River Trail, the Central North Island Rail Trail, the Bay of Islands to Hokiango Trail and parts of the Mountain to Sea Trail.

The first Great Ride that is scheduled to open is the St James Great Trail outside of Hanmer Springs with a planned opening date of November 20th, 2010. The remaining trails are expected to be complete by the summer of 2012-2013.

Funding Approved for the West Coast's Westland Wilderness Great Ride

There was more great news earlier this week for one of New Zealand’s planned Great Rides.

On Monday, the Westland Wilderness Trail received $3.2 million in funding from the New Zealand Cycle Trail Project. The trail is one of 18 other planned Great Rides throughout New Zealand and is a joint initiative of the Westland Wilderness Trust, The Westland District Council, the Grey District Council and the New Zealand Cycle Trail Project.

The Westland Wilderness Trail will help to develop a sustainable tourism product for the West Coast and is expected to generate $8 million in direct economic benefits each year. The trail will provide continued economic benefits to the whole of the West Coast region.

The 120 km, four-day grade one ride will begin in Greymouth and passes dense rainforest, lakes, wetlands and glacial rivers - all with the backdrop of the majestic Southern Alps.

Like New Zealand's other Great Rides, it is designed to take in the very best of New Zealand’s landscapes, culture and communities. The Westland Wilderness Trail passes through areas with rich history with much of the trail running along original tracks laid by Maori greenstone gathers and New Zealand gold miners.

After leaving Greymouth, the Great Ride travels for 12 km along the coast before heading inland to Kumara along a historic tramway. From Kumara the trail passes dense rainforest before following the Arahura River to Lake Kaniere and along old water races to Hokitika. The final 40 km will take riders through West Coast farmland to historic Ross.

The trail has multiple access points with day rides available from four urban centres and will offer years of sustainable tourism to the stunning West Coast region.

North Otago’s planned Great Ride the Alps 2 Ocean Trail received $2.75 million from the New Zealand Cycle Trail Project today. Starting at the base of New Zealand’s highest peak Mount Cook, the Alps 2 Ocean Trail will traverse 314 kms through the McKenzie Basin to Oamaru.

The Alps 2 Ocean Trail will be the longest of New Zealand’s 18 planned Great Rides. It will take riders through some of New Zealand’s most iconic landscapes – passing snow capped peaks at the beginning of the ride, picturesque lakes, green pastures and arid inland Otago landscape. The multi-day trail will be accessible for all abilities of riders with the assistance of a 780 metre descent and prevailing North Westerly winds.

The trail is a combined initiative of Waitaki District Council, Mackenzie District Council, the Mackenzie Tourism and Development Trust and the New Zealand Cycle Trail project.

The Alps 2 Ocean Trail will be a sustainable tourism product that will generate continued economic benefits for the many communities the trail passes through.

MacKenzie District Council Mayor John O’Neill says, “The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail offers a diverse range of scenery that can't be duplicated anywhere else in the world. It provides unique opportunities for individuals and towns adjacent to the trail such as Twizel to expand and develop tourism opportunities.”

Along the trail cyclists will pass Lakes Pukaki, Ruataniwha, Ohau, Benmore, Waitaki and Aviemore and the towns of Twizel, Omarama, Otematata, Kurow, Duntroon, Ngapara and Tokorahi. The Great Ride uses existing tracks and country roads for the 258 km from Mount Cook to Duntroon. The last section of the Great Ride uses country roads and a disused railway line.

Queenstown Trail Receives $1 Million Grant

There was great news yesterday for the Souther Lakes Region's planned Great Ride - The Queenstown Trail.

Thanks to a $1 million grant from the Central Lakes Trust, the planned 87 km long Queenstown Trail is one step closer to completion. Construction of the Great Ride is expected to cost approximately $5 million and yesterday’s grant brings the total raised for the cycle trail to over $3 million.

Wakatipu Trails Trust chief executive Kaye Parker is convinced another $2 million can be raised to complete the funding of the trail. The hope is yesterday’s grant will allow the Wakatipu Trails Trust to leverage further support for the remaining $1.7 million left to be raised.

Final details of the actual route are still being determined, but the Queenstown Trail will combine a series of trails to connect the Gibbston Valley, historic Arrowtown, Lake Hayes, Frankton and Queenstown. After the funding approval yesterday, discussion with landowners can continue and the tender process should start by the years end.

The first 24 km of the cycle trail should be completed within the next 12 months and the remainder finished in two years. The Queenstown to Arrowtown section is currently open for riding with significant improvements on the way.

The Queenstown Trail is one of 17 other planned Great Rides in New Zealand and is the first South Island trail to reach phase two of the government-sponsored programme.

This network of cycle trails will be based around New Zealand’s iconic attractions and will ultimately provide thousands of kilometers of trails. These “Great Rides” will take in the best of New Zealand’s dramatic landscapes and are the future of cycle tourism in New Zealand.

New Funding for the Clutha Gold Trail

Clutha Gold Trail receives $2.54 million from New Zealand Cycle Trail project

Nga Haerenga, The New Zealand Cycle Trail project will sign its contract for the new Clutha Gold Trail (Roxburgh to Beaumont section) at a formal event at the Roxburgh Service Centre today. The trail is a joint initiative of Clutha Gold Trail Charitable Trust and The New Zealand Cycle Trail project.

New Zealand Cycle Trail Programme Manager John Dunn congratulated the Clutha Gold Trail Charitable Trust on the extensive work they had undertaken to make today’s contract signing possible.

“The Government is investing in the Clutha Gold Trail to help develop a sustainable tourism product that will generate real and lasting economic benefits for the local communities involved. The Clutha Gold Trail is an easy-to-ride multi-day cycle experience that will be achievable for most fitness levels. It forms part of an extensive network of Great Rides in Otago and is intended to link directly with the well known Otago Central Rail Trail,” Mr Dunn says.

Central Otago District Council Mayor Malcolm Macpherson says the signing of this contract will be a great confidence-booster. “It will put wind in the sails of the other cycleway projects in Otago and Southland, reinforce our position as one of the world’s premier recreational cycling destinations, and provide a timely boost to the local economy.”

Clutha District Council Mayor Juno Hayes says he is also excited to see the project progress to this stage. “Our Council has set aside $10,000 a year over the next two years for the trail, as well as a $10,000 annual maintenance budget from 2012/13 to be capped at $100,000. It has done this as it sees this project as having real benefits for the entire district.”

Clutha Gold Trail Charitable Trust Chairman Rod Peirce says the Clutha Gold Trail has the potential to be a trail of national significance. “Benefits from the trail will include increased economic activity and employment, adding to the reputation of Otago as a cycling destination, and elevating the celebration of Otago’s goldfields heritage,” Mr Peirce says.

“The trust is very thankful for the funding support the trail received from both central and local Government. This includes funding support from the New Zealand Cycle Trail project, Central Otago District Council, Clutha District Council and Central Lakes Trust, as well as other co-funders,” he added.

Linking with the proposed Roxburgh Gorge Trail, the first 54km section of the Clutha Gold Trail (Part A) will start at the Lake Roxburgh Dam upstream from the Central Otago historic gold mining town of Roxburgh. The trail will then follow the Clutha Mata-Au River and pass through the Teviot District and Millers Flat to reach the rural town of Beaumont. Funding for a second section of trail, from Beaumount to Lawrence (Part B), is still under review.

Users will experience a unique rural and heritage experience through a river, gorge, and valley network. To enhance the experience, stories showcasing the area’s history of Maori, Chinese, pastoral farming, mining and rail histories, orcharding, arts and culture will be provided.

“The Clutha Gold Trail will be one of a series of Great Rides that will showcase the very best that New Zealand has to offer in terms of our landscapes, culture and communities. These Great Rides will be a draw-card for both international and domestic visitors and help build New Zealand’s already strong reputation as a premium tourism destination,” Mr Dunn added.

It has been a massive 6 months for us here at the Queenstown Innovation Centre working with the guys at Xebidy Social Web Design to design and develop the new website. Our dream was to develop New Zealand’s premium one stop shop for planning a cycle trip to New Zealand. We think we have certainly created the framework for this and now just need to get on our bikes and research and write more content.

We have had the NZbyBike.com website live for just over a week now and the response has been fabulous. Traffic has increased 45% from our original Cycleway Project website and we should reach 3,000 visitors this first month.

We have also had 20 businesses sign up for the paid listings in the first week and even better have already generated 7 enquiries from genuine customers directly to these businesses through our contact forms. After all that is what counts - generating bookings directly for our partners.

We have got a big September planned including:

One of the Team, Dan Roberts, talking at the eTourism Conference next week;
