The definitive where-to-ride guide for cycling in New Zealand

New Zealand's First Great Ride Launched

Cycle Trail News

The Great Rides of New Zealand are all go - as of July 2nd New Zealand’s first Great Ride will be officially opened.

The Ruapehu - Whanganui - Nga Ara Tuhono cycle trail is the first of the New Zealand ‘Great Ride’ cycle trails to be officially launched. The Prime Minister Mr John Key will declare the cycleway open when he cuts the ribbon following a karakia (Maori blessing) at the Ohakune Railway Station on the 2nd July.

Ultimately the Ruapehu - Whanganui - Nga Ara Tuhono cycleway will travel all the way from Ohakune at the foot of Mount Ruapehu all the way to the sea at Whanganui traversing through both the Tongariro National Park and the Whanganui National Park. For this reason the track will probably be most commonly referred to as the Mountains to Sea Trail. The opening of the Great Ride at the beginning of July represents the completion of two significant parts of the trail - The Old Coach Road from Ohakune to Horopito and the Raetihi to Mangapurua Track.

NZbyBike will be there on the 2nd July to ride the first few kilometres with John Key!
