The Motatapu Mountain Bike is New Zealand's iconic mountain bike event. Set in a spectacular southern high country valley only open to the public 1 day a year. There are hills to climb, rivers to cross and a few steep descents thrown in the mix.
If you are a first time mountain bike competitor, want to compete against your peers or beat your mates, or just want to enjoy the spectacular Southern high country valleys, then the Motatapu fits the bill.
The Motatapu Speight's Traverse Mountain Bike can be as challenging or as easy as you want it to be (depending on your definition of easy!) Set in the Southern high country valleys, there are rivers to cross, hills to climb, and a few steep descents thrown into the mix.
The race starts at Glendhu Bay on the shore of Lake Wanaka, near the Wanaka township, and finishes at historic Arrowtown. Your journey follows a route early Maori used for hunting and gathering, and to move Pounamu (Greenstone). The valley was not discovered by European explorers until around 1862, during the gold rush.
