The definitive where-to-ride guide for cycling in New Zealand

The Raetihi Gutbuster

Event: 2 months ago

Ruapehu, North Island

The Raetihi Gutbuster is a challenging and fun cycle ride that takes place Easter Sunday (March 31) on the fully sealed Raetihi - Pipiriki road.

There is a 50k option for serious riders, and an 18k option for kids, families and anyone who doesn’t like training much. Family friendly, the Start/Finish is on the lawn outside the Waimarino Museum where a fun market atmosphere welcomes riders and entertains spectators with Cake stalls, BBQ, Espresso coffee, Bouncy castle and good music. Come along and test your hill riding legs, have a few laughs and work off some Easter Eggs.

Starting outside the Waimarino Museum in Raetihi, the ride heads out of town, with a five kilometre downhill section through rolling farmland. After this a steep 2km climb takes you to the Waipuna turnoff and the first drink station. Here, the 18km option turns around the the 25km and 50 km riders carring on. The 18 km option is challenging, but suitable for familes. The 50km ride is a "Fun Ride" by classification, but that doesn't stop the top guys from riding it in 1 hour and 45 mintues.

The 50 km race ($25) begins at 11am, 25 km race ($37) begins at 11:30am and the 18 km race ($10) begins at 12.

Entry forms can be downloaded from here.
