The definitive where-to-ride guide for cycling in New Zealand

Contact Epic

Event: 1 year ago

Lake Wanaka, South Island

The Contact Epic is one of New Zealand's most challenging mountain bike races. Competitors have the option of a 95 km route or a 125 km route all circumnavigating the stunning Lake Hawea near Wanaka on New Zealand's South Island.

The Contact Epic is arguably one of the most challenging MTB races in New Zealand. Riders start and finish at the Lake Hawea Motor Inn and circumnavigate Lake Hawea.

Along the way, you'll ride through the Hunter Valley and Dingle Burn high country farming stations thanks to special permission from the land owners. Expect a bumpy ride, and be prepared for punctures.

You'll tackle epic climbs, challenging descents and cross ice cold rivers. This ride is an adventure, a challenge and a must-do for the serious mountain biker. Many competitors ride to race hard, while others simply tackle the epic as a personal challenge and a chance to experience the grandeur of this South Island high country.

New this year - the 35 km Contact Traverse. This significantly shorter course is designed to permit all levels of riders the chance to experience the unique atmosphere of one of NZ's most epic MTB races.
