Summer has flown by, and we hope you've taken advantage of this warm and dry weather we've had to get out and do some riding on our great cycle trails. We have loads to update you on this month with openings of Great Rides, Bike Festivals and details on Matt and Dan's <a style="color: #c89906;" href="http://nzbybike.com/about-nzbybike/the-nzbybike-blog/north-island-road-trip-6-days-5-great-rides-and-400-kms-of-riding/" target="_blank">North Island Road Trip</a>.
 
GODZONE Finishes in Queenstown

A big highlight of course for us was following the teams along the recently opened <a style="color: #c89906;" href="http://nzbybike.com/alps-2-ocean-cycle-trail" target="_blank">Alps to Ocean Cycle Trail</a>.
 
Big congrats to World Champs Team Seagate for taking out first and to Wanaka-based Harraway Oats, wow, fantastic effort coming in a close second - we can't wait to see you perform next year. Dan spent the week out following the top teams and he's convinced he'll be racing in 2014. Do you think he has it in him?
 
North Island Road Trip - A Huge Success

They covered over 400 kms, spending hours and hours on the saddle, and were absolutely blown away by the quality of rides on offer.
 
They returned believing more than ever that New Zealand is quite simply better by bike.
 
Dan and Matt rode the <a style="color: #c89906;" href="http://nzbybike.com/hauraki-rail-trail" target="_blank">Hauraki Rail Trail</a>, the <a style="color: #c89906;" href="http://nzbybike.com/motu-trails" target="_blank">Motu Loop Trail</a>, the <a style="color: #c89906;" href="http://nzbybike.com/great-lake-trail/" target="_blank">Taupo Great Lake Trail</a>, the <a style="color: #c89906;" href="http://nzbybike.com/mountains-to-sea-trail/bridge-to-nowhere-track-mangapurua-track/" target="_blank">Bridge to Nowhere</a> and the <a style="color: #c89906;" href="http://nzbybike.com/timber-trail" target="_blank">Timber Trail</a> - all in their entirety. It'd be impossible to pick a favourite, but the Timber Trail would be right up there with the huge range of track styles, stunning scenery, native bush and loads of downhill. Timber Trail Opening
 
<img src="http://www.nzbybike.com/assets/Newsletters/Timber-Trail-Bridge.jpg" alt="Timber Trail Bridge" style="border: 1px solid #ebebeb; float: right; margin: 10px; padding: 5px; width: 200px;"/>Even though the middle section of the <a style="color: #c89906;" href="http://nzbybike.com/timber-trail" target="_blank">Timber Trail</a> high on the flanks of Mt Pureora wasn't quite completed, we managed to ride the entire trail. It was great to meet some of the trail builders battling the midday heat to make the finishing touches on what is a fantastic ride.
 
They've finished, and the the <a style="color: #c89906;" href="http://nzbybike.com/timber-trail" target="_blank">Timber Trail</a> will be officially opened on Saturday, March 30th. If you're in the area, head on over to the entrance at Pureora for a 12 noon opening event and then head out on a ride. We reckon this will quickly become one of the North Island's most popular great rides.

Bike Festivals around NZ
 
A highlight of our trip on the North Island was spending some time in Rotorua for the Rotorua Bike Festival. Talk about a town that knows mountain biking - everywhere you look in Rotorua it seems there is a bike shop, a bike rack on the street corner or a new bike trail being built. We enjoyed catching up with loads of businesses at the Bike Expo as part of the festival - with all the major bike brands represented, regional NZCT Trail teams and plenty of the newest MTB kit to check out.
 
<img src="http://www.nzbybike.com/assets/Uploads/Chard-Farm.jpg" alt="SSR" style="border: 1px solid #ebebeb; float: right; margin: 10px; padding: 5px;"/><a style="color: #c89906;" href="http://www.queenstownbikefestival.com/" target="_blank">The Queenstown Bike Festival</a> is returning to the resort for its third consecutive year - it's an excellent 10 day event celebrating all aspects of cycling and packed with events to cater to weekend warriors to die hards. Running from the 22nd of March to the 1st of April, there are over 25 events to participate in or check out.
 
Our favourite is the Tour de Wakatipu which starts in beautiful <a style="color: #c89906;" href="http://nzbybike.com/regions/queenstown/arrowtown/millbrook-resort/" target="_blank">Millbrook Resort</a> and finishes at the iconic Chard Farm where music, food and wine are well deserved after either a 36 or 45 km ride across the Basin. NZXC Finishes Banner Domestic Season

<a style="color: #c89906;" href="http://www.nzbybike.com/nzxc-racing/" target="_blank">The NZXC Mountain Bike Race</a> team has finished up their domestic season with much success. Earlier in the month, Dirk won the 50km long Karapoti Classic - arguably New Zealand's most challenging MTB event and the longest running bike race in the Southern Hemisphere. They were down last weekend for the Motatapu MTB race and Dirk Peters and Carl Jones took out first and third respectively, with Dirk smashing the course record and beating World Champion Anton Cooper by over a couple minutes.
 
We look forward to supporting the team as they head off on the international race circuit starting in Europe this coming May. Radfahren in Neuseeland - The New Zealand Cycle Trail

She's touring the country for the second time in 18 months doing research for her German-published book on the New Zealand Cycle Trail.

North Island Summer Road Trip

On the cards are over 300 kms of riding and researching some of the newest trails of the New Zealand Cycle Trail Project.
They'll be riding the entire <a style="color: #c89906;" href="http://nzbybike.com/hauraki-rail-trail">Hauraki Rail Trail</a>, the Loop Trail of the <a style="color: #c89906;" href="http://nzbybike.com/motu-trails">Motu Trails</a> as well as some sections of the<a style="color: #c89906;" href="http://nzbybike.com/great-lake-trail/">Taupo Great Lake Trail</a> and the <a style="color: #c89906;" href="http://nzbybike.com/mountains-to-sea-trail/">Mountains to Sea Trail</a>. They'll be up north from February 14th to the 20th, and will also be spending some time in Rotorua to support the NZXC Racing team at the XC Nationals.

Trail of the Moment: Gold Digger

This custom built single track gem follows and crosses 7 Mile Creek for 2.5 kms and sits directly beside the Moke Lake access road. Smooth flowing with plenty of switchbacks and bermed corners, this beauty is a dual direction track that we reckon is one of the best tracks in the Southern Lakes Region.

2012 has been an incredible year for us with a massive overhaul of the website, signing a partnership with <a style="color: #c89906;" href="http://www.nzbybike.com/trek" target="_blank">Trek Bikes</a>, dozens of new businesses signing up each month, adding 100s of new trails to the website (with your help!) and the implementation of the Junction6 Travel Reservations system for our forthcoming Cycle Experiences.

Today we're featuring a classic ride from the Ruapehu Region of the North Island. The <a style="color: #c89906;" href="http://nzbybike.com/regions/ruapehu/regional-rides/tree-trunk-gorge/?utm_source=Newsletter&amp;utm_medium=Email&amp;utm_campaign=One%2BStop%2BShop" target="_blank">Tree Trunk Gorge Track</a> is a favorite of both Matt and Dan, and we reckon you'd love it to. This 19km ride follows single track through scenic native beech forest and starts about 20 kms south of Turangi. You'll cross a couple streams whilst riding this smooth flowing track and a couple gnarly uphills to keep you honest. Cutting Tracks: The Otago Central Rail Trail

This video series will feature the trail that started it all in NZ - the <a style="color: #c89906;" href="http://nzbybike.com/otago-central-rail-trail/?utm_source=Newsletter&amp;utm_medium=Email&amp;utm_campaign=One%2BStop%2BShop" target="_blank">Otago Central Rail Trail</a>. Tony Vercauteren and friends will spend a short week exploring the best on offer in the Central Otago Region. Expect vineyard tours, plenty of biking, pub dinners and stunning Otago countryside.

New Kennet Brothers Book

Traffic Milestone

Most of us have been taking advantage of longer and warmer days and getting back out on the bike - except for Dan. He continues to brag about the vertical metres he's logging up the ski hill - we keep telling him that that this doesn't translate to bike fitness, and Matt is bound to beat him in every race again this year!

Given the huge number of enquiries, emails and phone calls we're seeing from cyclists in NZ and abroad, offering pre-packaged trips was our logical next step.
We'll be working with our NZByBike Partner Businesses from around New Zealand to develop one-day to multi-day trips around all regions of NZ - including accommodation, bike hire, guided trips, activities and more. The official opening of the full 84 km trail is scheduled for this summer. We've had a hard time getting many updates on <a style="color: #c89906; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 24px;" href="http://nzbybike.com/timber-trail" target="_blank">The Timber Trail</a>. We can tell you it will stretch 77 kms through some stunning forest terrain with 800 year-old trees, a bush tramway and historic timber-milling sites. Currently, you can ride 8kms from Pureora village to Pureora Mountain. Have you any more updates? At your handlebars is 132 kms worth of trails that offer a bit of everything - from uphill grunts, to downhill bliss to rides along the Pacific, the Pakihi Stream or through the rolling bush-clad hills of the historic Motu region. The Pakihi Track is simply brilliant and includes 20 kms of advanced off-road riding through isolated bush over 25 bridges and a 35 metre swing bridge. Need we say more? <div style="line-height: 24px; font-family: Georgia, Arial; color: #1cad38; font-size: 24px; font-style: italic; margin-bottom: 10px;">Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail - 312 kms - 6 days</div>
<a style="color: #c89906; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 24px;" href="http://nzbybike.com/alps-2-ocean-cycle-trail" target="_blank">On the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail</a>, there is only a 10km section from Tasman Point and a few kilometres at the southern end of Lake Pukaki that sees you riding on developed 'cycle trail.' However, if you are keen you can in fact ride all the way from Mount Cook Village the full 312km to Oamaru on the road as a number of parties did last summer. It is expected to be a few years before the entire off-road trail is complete. <div style="line-height: 24px; font-family: Georgia, Arial; color: #1cad38; font-size: 24px; font-style: italic; margin-bottom: 10px;">Thermal By Bike – 74kms – 2 days</div>
Officially the <a style="color: #c89906; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 24px;" href="http://nzbybike.com/thermal-by-bike" target="_blank">Thermal By Bike</a> trail is 90% completed, however in reality most sections are not yet linked. The official opening is scheduled for later next year when you will be able to ride 74 kms from Rotorua all the way south to Lake Ohakuri past bubbling mud pools, geothermal baths, Maori history and the ubiquitous scent of sulphur. <div style="line-height: 24px; font-family: Georgia, Arial; color: #1cad38; font-size: 24px; font-style: italic; margin-bottom: 10px;">Waikato River Trails – 100 kms – 1 to 4 days</div>

The whole ride will take one to four days depending on your fitness, yet you can hop on at a number of access points for quick day trips. Dan rode this trail a couple months back and says it's one of Nga Haerenga's harder trails and we'd rank it at grade 3. <div style="line-height: 24px; font-family: Georgia, Arial; color: #1cad38; font-size: 24px; font-style: italic; margin-bottom: 10px;">Great Lake Trail – 93kms – 2 to 3 days</div>
<a style="color: #c89906; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 24px;" href="http://nzbybike.com/great-lake-trail" target="_blank">The Great Lake Trail</a> got some great press recently in the Australian Mountain Biker magazine, but we have been unable to get any official feedback on how far along development is with the trail beyond what is already there in the awesome W2K Track. <div style="line-height: 24px; font-family: Georgia, Arial; color: #1cad38; font-size: 24px; font-style: italic; margin-bottom: 10px;">Mountains to Sea – 317 kms – 4 to 6 days</div>
Already immensely popular last summer the <a style="color: #c89906; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 24px;" href="http://nzbybike.com/mountain-to-sea-trail" target="_blank">Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail</a> is completely open for riding from the mountains in Ruapehu to the sea in Whanganui on a mix of mountain bike trails, low-trafficked public roads and a jet boat to cross the Whanganui river at the iconic Bridge to Nowhere. <div style="line-height: 24px; font-family: Georgia, Arial; color: #1cad38; font-size: 24px; font-style: italic; margin-bottom: 10px;">Hawke's Bay Trails - 187 kms – 1 to 4 days</div>

The 43 kilometer Landscapes Ride offers expansive ocean views near Cape Kidnappers, the 96 kilometer Water Ride runs through Napier and is flat, easy and perfect for families whilst the 48 kilometer Wineries Ride (you guessed it) takes in the best of the world-famous Hawke's Bay wine growing regions. <a style="color: #c89906; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 24px;" href="http://nzbybike.com/hawkes-bay-trails/tourstransport/" target="_blank">A number of NZByBike Partners</a> in the region can bring you the most up to date trail information. <div style="line-height: 24px; font-family: Georgia, Arial; color: #1cad38; font-size: 24px; font-style: italic; margin-bottom: 10px;">The Old Ghost Road – 80 kms – 2 to 3 days</div>
<a style="color: #c89906; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 24px;" href="http://nzbybike.com/old-ghost-road" target="_blank">The Old Ghost Road</a> brought Nga Haerenga to the world stage last year when it was recognized by a UK travel publication as one of the top 5 rides in the world based on their experience of the first 12km. The full 80 kilometers are not due for completion until mid 2013 when there will be four newly designed huts en-route complete with double glazed windows, decks and stunning views of the backcountry. <div style="line-height: 24px; font-family: Georgia, Arial; color: #1cad38; font-size: 24px; font-style: italic; margin-bottom: 10px;">Roxburgh Gorge Trail &amp; Clutha Gold Trail</div>
The 34km Roxburgh Gorge Trail and the 75km Clutha Gold Trail will eventually link up with the Otago Central Rail Trail to make over 200 kilometers of amazing riding through Central Otago. Both trails have a long way to go before they will be ready for riding however. <div style="line-height: 24px; font-family: Georgia, Arial; color: #1cad38; font-size: 24px; font-style: italic; margin-bottom: 10px;">Tasman Great Taste Trail - 213 kms - 1 to 5 days</div>

The Dun Mountain Trail is an existing classic Grade 3 New Zealand mountain bike ride with stunning views and blissful downhills. In construction is the Great Taste Trail which will start in Richmond. Unfortunately the whole trail is not scheduled to be fully open until 2019. This summer we are expecting the sections from Richmond to Brightwater (opening in July) and Mapua to Motueka (opening end of the year) to be rideable. <a style="color: #c89906; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 24px;" href="http://nzbybike.com/st-james-cycle-trail/" target="_blank">The St James Cycle Trail</a> was the first New Zealand Cycle Trail to be opened back in October 2011. It's an epic back country experience for experienced mountain bikers ideally ridden over two days. You can check out <a style="color: #c89906; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 24px;" href="http://nzbybike.com/about-nzbybike/the-ride-blog/st-james-cycle-trail-official-opening/" target="_blank">Dan's blog</a> when he rode it on opening day. <div style="line-height: 24px; font-family: Georgia, Arial; color: #1cad38; font-size: 24px; font-style: italic; margin-bottom: 10px;">The Queenstown Trail - 90 kms – 2 to 3 days</div>
Construction is a plenty in the Queenstown region on the linking of existing trails and the addition of new trails. The sections from Queenstown to Jack's Point and Queenstown to Arrowtown are currently fully rideable with the sections linking Gibbston Wine Region to be completed for opening in November of this year. We have seen some of the bridges and new trails and are convinced <a style="color: #c89906; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 24px;" href="http://nzbybike.com/the-queenstown-trail/" target="_blank">The Queenstown Trail</a> will be truly magnificent! <div style="line-height: 24px; font-family: Georgia, Arial; color: #1cad38; font-size: 24px; font-style: italic; margin-bottom: 10px;">Around the Mountains - 175 kms – 2 to 3 days</div>
The original plan was for the 175km <a style="color: #c89906; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 17px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 24px;" href="http://nzbybike.com/around-the-mountains-trail/" target="_blank">Around the Mountains Trail</a> to open in 2012 but as far as we know there has been no construction undertaken along the Oreti River section. This means that only the 54km section on the gravel road from Walter Peak (accessed via boat) through Mount Nicholas Stations, and along the Von Valley, to Lake Mavora will be rideable in the immediate future as it was last summer. DOC camping facilities at Lake Mavora make this a popular out and back summer trip. <div style="line-height: 24px; font-family: Georgia, Arial; color: #1cad38; font-size: 24px; font-style: italic; margin-bottom: 10px;">Otago Central Rail Trail - 150 kms - 3 - 4 days</div>

Well if that doesn't get you excited about your next cycling trip, we don't know what will. Missing from the above list is the Westland Wilderness Trail which is still in planning phase. We are well into race season it seems with events going on all over NZ. Last weekend was the Motatapu going from Wanaka to Arrowtown (despite ideal conditions, Dan rode his slowest time ever - we're okay with this as more time on the bike meant more marketing for NZByBike to fellow riders). This weekend is the Rainbow Rage in Hanmer Springs and the weekend following is the Motutapu-Rangitoto Traverse in the Hauraki Gulf. The best way to start this Pedaling Update is with Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. It doesn't quite feel like Christmas here in the Queenstown Innovation Centre as everyone is still working like madmen. We are flat out at NZByBike making the final tweaks to NZByBike 2.0, while the guys from Junction6travel.com have two new large clients going live on their system. If the year ends this manic what will the new year bring?!
Yet between writing guides, making the new website look awesome and helping cyclists build itineraries around the country, we have still managed to slip in a few epic bike trips. Matt and Toby headed up into the<a style="color: #a0ac78;" href="http://nzbybike.com/regions/queenstown/queenstown/regional-rides/whakaari-conservation-area/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=menu&amp;utm_campaign=xmas" target="_blank"> Whakaari Conservation Area</a> near Glenorchy just last weekend (check out some of their<a style="color: #a0ac78;" href="http://www.facebook.com/nzbybike/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=menu&amp;utm_campaign=xmas" target="_blank"> epic photos on Facebook</a>) while Dan has been up doing some off road touring round Taupo and Rotorua - he is still raving about the <a style="color: #a0ac78;" href="http://nzbybike.com/waikato-river-trails/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=menu&amp;utm_campaign=xmas" target="_blank">Waikato River Trail</a>.

2011 has been an awesome year for cycling in New Zealand. Many of the New Zealand Cycle Trails (Nga Haerenga) have large sections rideable and everything we have experienced has been just fantastic. What is our favourite? Hard call! For the experienced cyclist the <a style="color: #a0ac78;" href="http://nzbybike.com/st-james-cycle-trail/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=menu&amp;utm_campaign=xmas" target="_blank">St James</a> is magnificient as are sections of the <a style="color: #a0ac78;" href="http://nzbybike.com/waikato-river-trails/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=menu&amp;utm_campaign=xmas" target="_blank">Waikato River Trail</a>. The first 20km of the <a style="color: #a0ac78;" href="http://nzbybike.com/old-ghost-road/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=menu&amp;utm_campaign=xmas" target="_blank">Old Ghost Road</a> from Lyall has international magazines clambering over themselves to get riding already and all the pictures we have seen of the <a style="color: #a0ac78;" href="http://nzbybike.com/timber-trail/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=menu&amp;utm_campaign=xmas" target="_blank">Timber Trail</a> look awesome.
For the less gung-ho riders much of the <a style="color: #a0ac78;" href="http://nzbybike.com/alps-2-ocean-cycle-trail/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=menu&amp;utm_campaign=xmas" target="_blank">Alps to Ocean</a> is opening and the<a style="color: #a0ac78;" href="http://nzbybike.com/twin-coast-cycle-trail/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=menu&amp;utm_campaign=xmas" target="_blank"> Twin Coast Cycle Trail </a>in Northland is really enjoyed by many (check out some of the comments on the website). But, no matter how many new trails develop you can never ignore how much fun the<a style="color: #a0ac78;" href="http://nzbybike.com/otago-central-rail-trail/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=menu&amp;utm_campaign=xmas" target="_blank"> Otago Central Rail Trail</a> is for all riders. If you have not ridden the Rail Trail perhaps this is your summer to do it. Dan likes it so much that he has riden it three times this year alone. We're not sure what Dan likes more: the flatness of the trail or the many pubs to stop in along the way.
2011 was also the year mountain bikers were allowed back on the <a style="color: #a0ac78;" href="http://nzbybike.com/regions/nelson/classic-rides/heaphy-track/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=menu&amp;utm_campaign=xmas" target="_blank">Heaphy Track</a>. We got the inside word from the guys at DOC that this has been a real success with only one unfounded complaint - so to all you guys that got out there and rode the Heaphy, a huge congratulations and thanks for hopefully helping towards making MTB access permanent.
Probably one of the saddest things to end the year on is the news that Pure Black Racing has been disbanded due to failure to find a sponsor for 2012. This is a real pity as these guys were really pushing New Zealand cycling and New Zealand talent into the limelight. A big congratulations goes to the guys at Avanti for the support they were able to give PBR in 2011 and to the whole team for the way they conducted themselves and their brilliant results. We are scanning the news hourly in the hope that someone is going to jump out of the woodwork and help these guys.

It's been a hugely successful month of promoting our Cycle-Friendly Business Partners from around New Zealand. Matt and Mat travelled to the inaugural On Your Bike Expo in Hamilton where NZByBike sponsored the Epic Destinations section.

It was absolutely fantastic to see almost 6,000 visitors through the doors over the course of the weekend; NZByBike were joined by RTOs from around New Zealand, tour operators, R&amp;R Sport, Avanti Bikes and dozens of other exhibitors doing their part to promote cycling in New Zealand.
We answered questions about Nga Haerenga, The New Zealand Cycle Trail, and paired keen cyclists up with our directory of 150 cycle-friendly businesses found around New Zealand.
To all our business partners that provided brochures, thanks heaps - we gave out nearly all of them.

Our Sponsorship of the On Your Bike Expo is only a small part of the work we're doing to promote Nga Haerenga, The New Zealand Cycle Trail, local and regional cycle trails and NZ cycle friendly businesses. Anna and Dan are currently working to get a number of our Where to Ride Guides available by the start of next year - these feature cycle trails around New Zealand in detail and make planning a trip cycling that much more convenient.
We're well under way in our planning of the 2012 New Zealand Cycle Tourism Conference where we'll all come together to nail out how to best promote New Zealand cycling and cycle trails to the domestic and international market. We all know NZ is a bloody great place to ride, and our aim is to get more New Zealanders and international visitors out on their bikes enjoying our fantastic cycle trails.

With longer and warmer days comes a renewed interest in cycling in New Zealand. Our traffic continues to rise at about 20% per month and we're now seeing over 8,000 unique visitors monthly. Most importantly, we're receiving enquiries daily to our NZByBike partners and emails directly from cycle tourists planning their trip here.
More and more of our <a style="color: #a0ac78; text-decoration: none;" href="http://nzbybike.com/rides-in-nz/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=menu&amp;utm_campaign=spring2011">Great Rides</a> will be opening up this Spring and Summer and we're certainly seeing this interest on NZByBike.com.

Matt just returned from riding the Rail Trail Classic 100 miler. Nevermind a three day leisurely ride, this challenging race takes in the entirety of the trail that <a style="color: #a0ac78; text-decoration: none;" href="http://nzbybike.com/otago-central-rail-trail/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=menu&amp;utm_campaign=spring2011">started it all in New Zealand</a>. Conditions were less than ideal again this year with a challenging headwind from Ranfurly on and heaps of snow around Middlemarch. Needless to say, Matt is walking with a bit of a limp today! Watch out for Team NZByBike at more races over Spring and Summer.

First off, we're over the moon with the press we have received recently. NZByBike won the Otago section of the ANZ Business Plan competition; Dan spent hours over the previous weeks off his bike and stuck in the office polishing up the NZByBike business plan.

NZ Tourism Happenings
There is a real positive feeling throughout the tourism industry at the moment. Dan has just returned from a Backpacking, Youth and Adventure Tourism Association Board meeting in Christchurch and he reports the mood is really positive. The new city plan was released yesterday and it seems that tourism considerations have been given real high priority.

Ministry of Economic Development figures that came out in the Tourism Industry Monitor last week show a huge rise in the business confidence index, that is the majority of tourism businesses expect demand to rise in the next three months relative to the same period last year. Certainly a great deal is attributable the upcoming Rugby World Cup - but generally we are getting really good vibes from everyone in tourism.

As the days get longer, we'll be spending more time out on our bikes taking in the best of the Southern Lakes. Matt and Dan have already started training for the Otago Rail Trail Classic on September 25th, a 100 mile race along the entire Otago Rail Trail - the ride that started it all in New Zealand. Hopefully we'll see you there.

Quick Visit to Wellington
Dan and Matt just returned from a quick trip to Wellington. Highlights of the 48 hours in the capital included meeting the New Zealand Cycle Trails crew from the Ministry of Economic Development. We missed them whilst they were at TRENZ and appreciated the opportunity to get filled in on the latest developments of the <a href="http://nzbybike.com/rides-in-nz/great-rides/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=menu&amp;utm_campaign=newsletter0115">18 Great Rides</a>.
We are constantly getting emails and phone calls from cycle tourists who are already planning their trips on these multi-day trails and it's great for MED to keep us updated.
Dan and Matt also presented the growth of cycle tourism to a fantastic conference and caught up on the developing Hutt Valley - Wairarapa Trail which is simply fantastic.

We hope this finds you well as we head quickly into winter here in the Southern Lakes.

While his original plan was to head to the North Island after visiting Nelson, he found there was so much interest in the area with the <a href="http://nzbybike.com/regions/nelson-and-marlborough/heaphy-track/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=menu&amp;utm_campaign=newsletter0115">Heaphy Track</a> having just opened to mountain bikers that he would delay the trip up North for another time.
Matt was absolutely blown away by the riding in the Nelson and Golden Bay Regions!
